Kathy Spalding     1952-2014

Kathy Spalding was an internationally renowned sculptor and nature artist based in Naples, Florida, known for work rooted in organic form and the natural world.

Kathy and I were knitted together by a childlike obsession with all things nature. My long, rich visits were spent absorbing her paintings and studying my pieces of art. She was generous with her knowledge and relentless in guiding my exploration of how light transforms shape and tone. With an object in one hand and the hard click of a flashlight in the other, she reinforced the magic of light and shadow.

Reynier Llanes

Reynier Llanes is a Cuban-born painter based in Miami and represented by the Harmon-Meek Gallery in Naples, Florida. He has shown in Dubai, and his work is in the permanent collections of over 30 museums and institutions.

I have worked with Lois for many years, and our friendship led me to take her on as my sole private student. I introduced her to areas she had not worked in before, including the movement of water, and she mastered them quickly. She is eager to learn and works extremely hard. She takes her work seriously and passionately.

Marco Bronzini

Marco Bronzini is a French-born artist and author educated at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, with work in major museums including the Paul Mellon Collection.

Most of my instruction happens in the classroom, but I take a few students privately and they  are  advanced artists. Lois has mastered many techniques. But we began by eliminating bad habits, and she proved to be a quick and eager learner. Her strength is abstraction. She has a keen eye for color and shape and brings them together into compelling work.

About

Philosophy

From an early age, both art and the natural world were inseparable. Born in Brooklyn, her first sense of wonder came from gazing at the harbor lights against the darkest sky as Lois left New York City by train bound for Arkansas to visit her grandparents’ dairy farm where she spent her childhood summers.  The contrast between the glittering city sights and the quiet essence of farm life became the foundation of the duality of Lois’ imagination. This kaleidoscope flows through her work, often within a single piece. It can be whimsical and vibrant yet also rooted in realism and drama. Whether painting in abstract or realism, the brush becomes Lois’ “Ouija”.  Her attitude is simple: surprise me. Lois says she never quite knows where a painting will take her, but each piece unfolds like a storybook: colors full of energy, and forms of discovery that come more from within rather than the lens of the outside.

Journey in Art

Lois has been a lifelong student of art and has been fortunate to study with gifted instructors in Naples, Santa Fe, North Carolina, and Miami, as well as at the Renwick Gallery, D.C. While in Santa Fe her art was declared reminiscent of transcendental art of New Mexico  abstract visions of the natural world. That still fuels her.

Career Path

It was discouraged to consider a career in art at that time. Instead, she ventured into politics while living in Washington, D.C., which led to a successful business, followed by a key position at General Electric. Her art degree transmuted into an MBA. Eventually, Lois stepped away from that hectic business world which afforded her an opportunity to choose to live her passion in what she calls “the other side of the moon”. Residing for decades in coastal Florida, surrounded by paints and brushes, visually embracing emotions, and relishing life, Lois is that “zany, possessed artist”.
